Improving MEDiterranean irrigation and Water supply for smallholder farmers by providing Efficient, low-cost, and nature-based Technologies and practices MED-WET
Researchers from the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and LITecS (Laboratory of Innovation and Technologies for Agriculture) are working on an innovative irrigation technology to minimise the consequences of drought on agricultural production. The new system is part of the European MED-WET project, which aims to improve the management of water resources in regions facing water shortages.
The innovative irrigation technology is being developed as part of a European project involving a team of researchers from UBI.
The new equipment is still being prepared for installation on an experimental farm in Fundão, where cherry trees grow. The hope is that it will be used on farms.
The aim of LITecS work in the field is to help validate an agricultural irrigation system that can minimise the consequences of drought in regions where agriculture faces serious water shortages, through remote monitoring using LoRa.
